Explainer Video

University of California - Small Business First
UC has an ambitious goal of spending $2.5 Billion of its annual $10 Billion procurement budget with Small and Diverse Businesses.  They asked me to explain their Small Business First program in 2 minutes...

Small and diverse businesses have suffered disproportionately from the COVID pandemic. The University of California intends to help.

The 10-campus UC system spends approximately $10 Billion a year on everything from French fries to fruit flies. Given such immense buying power, their procurement division created the Small Business First program to set-aside contracts from $10,000-$250,000 for small and diverse businesses and to simplify the purchasing process, too.

When UC approached me to create an explainer video, they had only one piece of the puzzle — a testimonial interview with the owner of a small catering company granted a contract by UCSF.  My task was to augment that interview extensively to explain and promote Small Business First to small and diverse businesses throughout California.

Given the small budget and a tight deadline, I opted for a titles-only script, leveraging original footage, stock footage and production music to get business owners excited to participate.

My roles in the production:

Concept, script, soundtrack, original footage, stock footage selection, color-grading, editing.
